About the Course

Day 1: Flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe Airport

On arrival at Lusaka Airport, you will connect onto a domestic scheduled flight to Mfuwe Airport, where a guide from Kafunta Safaris will welcome you and take you to Kafunta River Lodge.

Kafunta River Lodge will be your home during the first 4 nights of your South Luangwa exclusive safari.

Day 1-5: Kafunta River Lodge – South Luangwa

Kafunta River Lodge is a classic Zambian safari lodge, combining all the essentials for a great safari, including its spectacular location at the edge of the floodplain. Beyond the plain, lies the Luangwa River – one of the best game viewing areas in the magical South Luangwa National Park. This is indeed the premier park in Zambia and one of the best national parks in Africa. The lodge was fully renovated in 2019 and offers a relaxed atmosphere and great attention to details.

At Kafunta River Lodge, each of the luxury private chalets, the main lounge and the dining decks overlook the game-rich floodplain. The eight safari chalets stand on raised wooden platforms and have thatched roofs and private viewing decks. They are pleasantly decorated to match the local style. The Lodge also have two spacious luxury suites with extra-large en-suite bathrooms. Each suite features a cosy mezzanine with additional day beds and an open balcony. All the rooms all have comfortable sitting areas with coffee and tea facilities and a small fridge stocked with refreshing drinks.

Central to the lodge is our relaxing lounge and dining area, thatched in a traditional African style. The extensive decks lead to the stunning and undisturbed view of the plain and its frequent wild visitors. So many stylish places to unwind: the sofas near the wild mango tree, the cosy fireplace or the reclining sunbeds by the infinity pool. When the night comes, enjoy sumptuous candlelit meals under the vast African sky, in company of the hippos wallowing in the waterhole or the while-tailed mongoose scurrying by.

Activities at Kafunta River Lodge:

• Day and Night Game Drives (main focus)

• Walking Safaris

• Safari Sundowners

• Photographic Hide

• Community Visits

Day 5: Transfer from Kafunta River Lodge to Island Bushcamp

After breakfast in the morning, you guide will take you on a game drive transfer to The Island Bush Camp, where you will most likely arrive in time for lunch.

Day 5-7: Island Bush Camp – South Luangwa

Set under the shade of ancient mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, this authentic Zambian bush camp is the gateway to one of the most remote and unspoilt areas of South Luangwa National Park.

Island Bush Camp offers a pure wilderness experience with walking safaris at the core of its activities. This is what is regarded as one of the typically traditional remote Luangwa bush-camps. The Camp has five rooms, each on raised wooden decks and made of grass and reed; the rooms are open-fronted and set overlooking the main Luangwa River.

Whilst drives are possible because you will have arrived by vehicle, the emphasis is on walking safaris from this camp as there are not many roads in the area. There really are no other tourist facilities in the vicinity of this camp so this is one of the few camps where you really will find yourself far away from any other tourists.

The en-suite bathrooms are on the same raised level as the bedrooms; there is running cold water and flush toilets but the hot water is heated and delivered to your rooms as and when you wish to enjoy a bucket shower.

Kafunta Safaris have for a number of years worked at keeping their rates at the more reasonable end when compared with their neighbours but their recent product up-grades have resulted in their product providing excellent value for money services.

Activities at Island Bush Camp:

• Walking Safaris (main activity)

• Limited game drives

• Special Sundowners

• Waterhole Hide

Day 7: Transfer from Island Bush Camp to Three Rivers Camp

On this day, you will be transferred to Three Rivers Camp, where you will spend the last 2 nights of this South Luangwa exclusive safari experience.

Day 7-9: Three Rivers Camp – South Luangwa

Three Rivers Camp is a luxury tented safari camp set at the confluence of the Luangwa, Kapamba and Lusangazi Rivers in South Luangwa, Zambia. The stylish tents sit under shady sausage trees facing the Luangwa River or the game-rich lagoon.

Three Rivers Camp is the latest addition to the Kafunta Safaris’ portfolio. The Camp is located approximately 2 hours South of Kafunta River Lodge and a mere 7 km North of Island Bush Camp, with the option of walking between both bush camps – an experience we strongly recommend.

Three Rivers Camp is exquisitely intimate with only 5 tents, decorated with natural materials and earthy hues. They have large gauzed windows embracing extensive views of the Luangwa River and the nearby lagoon. Each tent has its own wooden deck with comfy chairs to enjoy the surrounding vistas. The en-suite bathrooms include indoor and outdoor showers, double sinks and flushing toilets.
